Friday night’s game was as hot as the rest of them, and the fans played their part in making the atmosphere electric, with nothing but neon seen in the stands. Week Two of Cav Nation’s 2023 football season was extremely competitive, but LT pulled out a 20-10 victory over Steele with two converted touchdowns and two field goals.
The game began with an opening kick from the Cavs to the Knights. After Steele was forced to punt, LT recovered the ball and made their way up the field, with Chastin Ditta and Kadyn Leon gaining yardage and first downs. Kicker Braydon Doane placed a 26-yard field goal between the uprights, giving the Cavs three points and giving fans, players, and coaches something to cheer about.
Once Steele repossessed the ball, Easton Aird got a 5-yard sack on the Knight’s quarterback, which led to the Knights punting once again to LT. The ball was caught and stopped on the 39-yard line. The subsequent play by Kadyn Leon resulted in a 39-yard run, resulting in the Cav’s first touchdown. The extra point was successfully made by Doane, bumping the score to 10-0 in the first quarter. Steele continued to work their way along the yard lines, eventually finding themselves at LT’s nine-yard line with a 4th down and forced to attempt a field goal. It was blocked by the Cav’s linemen and was recovered on the Cav’s own eight-yard line.
After halftime, Josiah Estes intercepted a Steele pass, placing the Cavs on the Knight’s 21-year line. “I just saw that ball. I said that gotta be mine,” said Estes. “And I just took that thing.” LT advanced down the field, and runningback Marcion Williamson rushed for two yards to score another Cavalier touchdown. The conversion was made, making the score 17-3.
Although Steele went on to score another touchdown, the Cavs retaliated with a field goal, putting the final score at 20-10.
Both coaches are players feel good going into the next few games. “The seniors have really stepped up this season,” said Estes. “And we’ve really come together.”
The Cavs will face Buda next Friday at Cavalier Stadium.
